Deirdre Denis, DDS
Dr. Deirdre Denis, BSc, DDS earned her dental degree from the University of Toronto, graduating with awards of distinction in orthodontics and oral surgery. She then interned at Mount Sinai Hospital, learning dentistry techniques firsthand from some of Toronto’s most respected specialists.
Zoey
Zoey Friedman, DDS
Dr. Zoey Friedman, BSc, MSc, DDS received her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Western Ontario. She then completed her Master’s of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees at the University of Toronto.

Do I Need Orthodontic Treatment?

The key to healthy smiles is early preventive care. Parents should schedule their child’s first dental visit by their first birthday, or when their child’s first tooth comes in. Children are at risk for cavities as soon as their baby teeth erupt, so it’s important to be proactive about your child’s oral health. Be sure to schedule regular checkups every six months to keep your child’s smile healthy and strong.

What is Early Orthodontic Intervention?

Early orthodontic intervention occurs when..
Treatment begins before all of a child's baby teeth are lost. Sometimes early intervention helps treat certain conditions.

What kinds of conditions are treated?

Common conditions that could need early intervention are:

  • protruding teeth - front teeth may stick out and be prone to fracture
  • crowding or narrow tooth arches - expansion of the palate can crest more room for the larger adult teeth
  • underbite - the bottom jaw come out ahead of the upper jaw
  • crossbite - some bottom teeth protrude in front of the top teeth
  • open bite - the front top teeth do not touch with the bottom teeth when biting down
  • thumb sucking or tongue thrusting - habit breaking appliances can help

Why Early intervention is needed?

Sometimes your child’s problem is one that could become more serious over time if left untreated. The goal of early treatment is to intercept the developing problem, eliminate the cause, guide the growth of facial and jaw bones, and provide adequate space for incoming permanent teeth. Your child may require a second phase of treatment after all permanent teeth have come in to move those teeth into their best positions.
